The Steel Erectors Association of America (SEAA) announces the recipients of the 2022 Safety Excellence and Craft Training Excellence Awards. “Our members are dedicated to the safety and health of their employees, and these award programs provide them with the recognition they deserve for going above and beyond in the name of safety and training,” said Bryan McClure, Chairman of SEAA’s Safety and Education Committee. For both awards, World Class is issued to the highest achieving companies. Premier is the second level, followed by Gold. “Our industry is in a transition period where more and more people are showing interest in our field,” said McClure. “Good safety records, comprehensive training aligned with long-term career paths, and awards recognitions, are among the criteria that prospective employees consider when deciding where to apply. Beyond the inherent value of being a safe company, it’s also a great marketing tool in a highly competitive market.” Safety Excellence The Safety Excellence Award goes to eight SEAA member companies in three categories with excellent 2021 safety records. Recipients were selected based on evaluations of their EMR ratings, OSHA 300A statistics, and safety program processes over the last three years. Scoring was based on points assigned to a multi-criteria analysis, conducted in blind review by members of SEAA’s Safety & Education Committee. Craft Training Recognition Two companies were recognized for their craft training programs. Applicants were evaluated on the portability of credentials, availability of apprenticeship programs, training, and recruitment efforts. Evaluations for the Craft Training Excellence award are made in comparison to other companies of similar size, based on the number of ironworkers employed from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2021. Note that there were not submissions by employers in all size categories for 2022. “This year we have re-allocated craft training grants to be awarded to the World Class Craft Training winners. Each company receives $2,250 to use for implementation of future training projects,” said Pete Gum, SEAA’s Executive Director. “These companies have shown their commitment to training and we want to help them to continue these efforts.” About Steel Erectors Association of America

Entries could be submitted in four classes for Structural Construction based on contract value for that portion of the job. In addition, the association opened a new category this year for Miscellaneous Metals in two classes. This category includes bridges, decking, ornamental steel, reinforcing steel, and steel fabrication projects.
In all, seven companies were recognized for effectively solving unique jobsite challenges while safely completing projects. (Note, there were no submissions this year for Class II Structural or Class I Miscellaneous Metals.) Project submissions are chosen by an independent panel of judges. In October, SEAA held its first Convention and Trade Show since 2019. This was the first time back to in-person meetings for many of the 40+ exhibitors and nearly 200 attendees who came to Orlando. Attendees leveraged every minute of their time together to reconnect and network face-to-face with customers and friends.
In 2022, the annual meeting returns to its normal spring schedule. It will be held April 5-8, in Charleston, S.C. This is a special meeting, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the association. Three excursions and a Gala, to be held on the historic USS Yorktown, will make this a convention to remember. SEAA’s Board of Directors in coordination with the Membership Committee has partnered with CareerPlug, an applicant tracking system, to better assist members with the hiring process. "No matter the size of your company, hiring is one of the biggest challenges our members face. If you've never used an applicant tracking system, I can tell you from personal experience, that this type of tool helped our company streamline our hiring processes,” said Jack Nix, COO for Shelby Erectors Inc., and Chairman of the Membership Committee. Through this strategic partnership, every SEAA member will receive a free CareerPlug account that comes with a company branded careers page to showcase available job openings. SEAA members will have access to job templates, a configured hiring process to help evaluate your applicants, and access to a team of hiring experts. SEAA members will have the option to upgrade the free account to a Premium Subscription, starting at $795/year. The upgraded subscription allows for unlimited job postings to top job boards like Indeed, ZipRecruiter, GoogleJobs, Facebook Jobs, and more. It also provides access to evaluation tools like personality assessments, interview scorecards, access to free one-on-one coaching (within the first 30 days of upgrading), text messaging, and paperless onboarding. SEAA is excited to offer this exclusive benefit to our members. SEAA’s Safety & Education Committee is looking for jobsites to film Craft Training videos. The project is part of an initiative to build an archive of videos that can be used by SEAA members to complement existing in-house training and that will coordinate with the SEAA/NCCER curriculum. Among the topics we are looking to shoot are bar joist/girder projects, welding, deck installation, and multiple lift rigging. Participants must be willing to have videos and pictures taken on active job sites. Other requirements include:
Companies will receive exposure for volunteering, and are encouraged to prominently display their company logo on all equipment and PPE worn by workers in the videos. For more information, contact Bryan McClure. Video topics include:
SEAA has completed its nationwide search for a new Executive Director, and is pleased to welcome Pete Gum to the position. Gum has 29 years of experience as the CEO of not-for-profit construction trade associations. “We received applications from dozens of qualified candidates across the country. The Board of Directors was extremely thorough in their search and conducted multiple rounds of panel interviews throughout the process,” said Geoff Kress, President of SEAA. “We are thrilled to have Pete as part of our organization.” Gum has a proven track record with helping associations increase membership. He comes to SEAA from the Associated Builders & Contractors of Western Pennsylvania, where he served as President. It was in this role that he worked closely with the NCCER craft training curriculum and increased student participation in the association’s craft training programs. Gum attended his first SEAA Board of Directors meeting on July 7 in Pittsburgh, Pa. He said, “The Meet & Greet in my hometown of Pittsburgh was an introduction to the needs of members. I look forward to getting to know more erectors, fabricators, contractors and suppliers across the country, as we work together toward expanding the association’s footprint and increasing member value.”
SEAA’s Trade Show provides erectors and fabricators a chance to see the latest products, services and innovations they need for safer, more productive work site. This year, SEAA is offering exhibitors a choice of indoor or outdoor booth locations, and all exhibitors have the option to participate in live demonstrations at no extra cost. “We will have three hours of dedicated trade show time, with hands-on presentations from exhibitors for a highly-engaged trade show experience,” said Carrie Gulajan, Chairman of the Convention Committee. To accommodate social distancing and small group engagement, attendees will be split into two groups. Half will visit indoor booths, while half will visit outdoor booths. Groups will rotate at the mid-point in the schedule, and the live demonstrations will be staggered between two time slots. “We are offering two promotions to encourage exhibitors to confirm their booths early,” said Gulajan. The Early Bird Special is for exhibitors that reserve and pay for their booth by May 31. They receive (1) complimentary e-mail blast in our Convention Products & Services Showcase. In 2022, SEAA’s 49th Convention & Trade Show returns to its regular schedule in North Charleston, S.C. “The All that Jazz Discount is for members only. Make a $500 deposit on your 2022 booth by October 31, 2021 to secure 2021 Trade Show Rates,” said Gulajan. Learn more at https://www.seaa.net/seaa-convention--trade-show.html In 2021, SEAA renamed the annual Education Fundraiser Golf Tournament in memory of Dave Schulz, SEAA past president, who was instrumental in organizing the event for many years. The 2021 tournament will be held in Orlando, Fla., on October 12, preceding the 48th Convention & Trade Show. The Captain’s Choice style tournament is open to members and non-members. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams, longest drive, closest to the pin, and more. Registration fees include green fee, cart, range balls, lunch, and beverages. Sponsorship opportunities are also available at seaa.net/daveschulzgolf. Through this event, SEAA has awarded more than $40,000 in Craft Training grants and for the development of training videos. SEAA is working toward developing approximately 20 Level 1 videos that can be used to accompany the SEAA/NCCER Ironworker Craft Training Program.
The SEAA Board of Directors announces that its 48th Convention and Trade Show, previously scheduled for April 2021 in Orlando, Fla., will now take place Oct. 12-14, 2021. The meeting will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton at the entrance to Universal, in Orlando, Fla.
“In order to accommodate evolving recommendations for in-person gatherings related to the coronavirus pandemic, the Convention Committee has set the new dates with high hopes that the environment will be back on track by the third quarter,” said Carrie Gulajan, Convention Committee Chairperson. “We made this decision based on travel industry projections and watching what other trade organizations are doing. We feel strongly that the biggest value to be gained is from in-person networking,” she said. Details of the agenda are being finalized, but the tentative program is as follows: Tuesday, Oct. 12: Education and Training Fundraiser Golf Tournament Wednesday, Oct. 13: Exhibitor Setup, Project of the Year Award Winners Panel Discussion, Welcome Reception Thursday, Oct. 14: Trade Show and Indoor and Outdoor Exhibitor Demos, Education Sessions, Closing Night Awards and Reception Hotel, meeting, and trade show registration links will open by February 15.
