AISC Certification Reminders and New Design Guides Available

11/13/2018

If you are AISC Certified, you are already familiar with tracking nonconformances. However, you may have overlooked a requirement in the new Certification Standard for Steel Fabrication and Erection, and Manufacturing of Metal Components, related to Periodic Management Review, reports Atema.

Implementing a quality management system (QMS) affects every aspect of an organization's performance. Control and measurement are two QMS areas largely accomplished through routine audits. How the results of an audit are handled is key, and the goal should be to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of each process, to communicate findings to employees, and to develop best practices and processes based on the data collected during the audit.

Section 1.5.2 of the AISC Certification Standard for Steel Fabrication and Erection, and Manufacturing of Metal Components addresses Periodic Management Review, stating the following: “Executive management shall conduct periodic review of the quality management system at planned intervals, but annually at a minimum. Management review shall encompass, assess and report the following, at a minimum: (d) An assessment of product or work nonconformances. Both the number and severity of nonconformances shall be assessed.

“The addition of ‘severity’ [of nonconformances] may be a tripping point for you,” writes Paul Prozcko of Atema. The company recommends “a thorough review of your log and make any necessary updates. Doing so now will keep you from having to add another entry come audit time!”

In related news, two new design guides from AISC are now available. The second edition of AISC Design Guide 21: Welded Connections- A Primer for Engineers is an overview of weld types, weld design, quality, inspection and safety. The AISC Design Guide 33: Curved Member Design, provides much-needed advice on designing projects with curved steel. It also holds additional information on detailing, fabrication and contract document requirements.
