joel hall
porter steel, inc.

Name: Joel Hall
Title: Vice President of Operations
Company: Porter Steel, Inc.
Education/Training:
High school; Associated Builders and Contractors of Georgia’s Future Leadership Program; OSHA 30; Rigging; Fall Protection; First aid and CPR; Certified Observer for written and practical testing for NCCER.
Years in the Industry: 21
Other Industry Experience, including Leadership roles with SEAA and/or other Industry Groups:
I’ve grown up in the steel trade starting off at 18 years old driving a forklift in the yard, to becoming a certified welder/ connector, promoted to Site Foreman, Field Superintendent, General Superintendent, Project Manager for fabrication and erection, Director of Field Operations, and now VP of Operations for both structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication and erection at Porter Steel, Inc. I’m the Director and main point of contact for Porter’s NCCER Learning & Development program. I've been an active member of SEAA’s Events Committee since 2023 and helped launch the Atlanta Peer Group for SEAA. I'm currently also on The Athens Career Academy's Advanced Manufacturing Pathway Advisory Board helping high school students not only learn the skills for technical trades, but preparing them to find employment in the trades by working with them on resume crafting, mock interviews, and connecting them with internships to give them the best leg up in their careers.
Statement of why you wish to serve on the SEAA BOD.
Throughout my career, I have always seen the value in combining the expertise of experienced Ironworkers in whatever my role was at the time, while also listening to the perspectives and challenges of ironworkers from other areas of the trade. This approach has helped me avoid many communication headaches and solve problems more effectively by understanding how each part of the steel industry’s practices are interconnected.
After 21 years, I still believe that bringing together experts with hands-on experience from all areas of the steel trade—whether through casual peer group chats or focused industry planning initiatives—strengthens our ability to advocate for all Ironworkers and move the industry forward.
My career has focused on safety and educating the next generation of ironworkers. Combining these two pillars with my unique experience as both a structural and miscellaneous steel erector as well as a structural and miscellaneous steel fabricator, I believe I can offer valuable insights to SEAA’s Board of Directors in providing a more comprehensive perspective of the steel trade. My work history not only spans small, mid-sized, and large steel contractors, but as VP of Operations at Porter Steel, I’ve played a key role in our massive 400% (and continuing) growth over the past 3 years, transforming it into the large steel fabrication and erection SEAA member it is today—and the even larger one it will be tomorrow. My experience working with contractors of all sizes, along with my role in guiding a company through such tremendous growth gives me real-world knowledge of the challenges faced by SEAA’s membership body.

I would be honored to serve on SEAA’s Board of Directors and use my wide perspective and extensive experience to help craft the next generation of best practices and standards for the entire steel industry’s future.

Statement of why you want to sit on the SEAA BOD: I have always heard high praise throughout the industry about SEAA. When the opportunity came to attend my few first meetings/conventions, two things stood out; how much knowledge the organization has within the industry and how big of a networking platform the association provides. Because of this, steel erectors across the country can benefit from learning about best industry practices, updated OSHA regulations, job training information and more. Working for a company who has always been apart of SEAA it only seems fitting to keep the company name active in the industry, with an organization that we feel so passionate about.

Based on my strengths and experience in safety, I feel as though I can help steel erectors provide a solid foundation of principles and become more educated within their companies. Based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics release dated 12/19/2023, the construction industry had 1,056 fatalities in 2022 which is an 11% increase from 2021. Doing everything I can to raise awareness and instill best practices to lower these fatalities is my passion. Having the opportunity to be on SEAA’s BOD would fulfill that passion all while getting to work with some of the most talented individuals in the industry
