Ironworker Craft Training and Apprenticeship Updates

Since establishing its Ironworker Craft Training program in March 2014, several member companies have registered as training and assessment sites. The curriculum is based on the NCCER Ironworker material plus additional modules for welding, rigging, and signalperson.

 

In addition, the association has submitted "Standards of Apprenticeship" to the U.S. Department of Labor.  Registration was expected to be finalized by the end of August 2014. This is a federally recognized standard that can be used in any state by member companies to establish a registered apprenticeship program. More

Project of the Year Nominations for 2014 Now Open
SEAA seeks nominations for steel erection projects that demonstrate complexity or unusual conditions, or conquered issues and barriers requiring special management team action or performance. The competition is open Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2014. Nominations must be postmarked by Feb. 6, 2015.

New this year are discounts for new members or current members who make a nomination. New members can receive the discount by putting POY 2014 on your application. Current members may apply their discount to attend the 2015 convention by emailing admin@seaa.net.

Register Now for SEAA Educational Fundraiser Golf Tournament
SEAA returns Oct. 3, 2014 to the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University located in Raleigh, N.C. Designed by the Arnold Palmer Design Company, the course is rated one of the Best Campus Courses by Golfweek Magazine.

This event is open to all steel erectors, fabricators, detailers, engineers, general contractors, architects, suppliers/manufacturers and services that support the steel erection industry and training and education of their workforce. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

 

A Board of Directors meeting will take place prior to the tournament on Oct. 2.  More

SEAA-MAC Holds 3rd Annual George R. Pocock Memorial Golf Tournament

 

Contractors and construction firms in the SEAA Mid-Atlantic Chapter gathered in Gainesville, Va., on Sept. 5, to play golf and raise money for construction related training and educational materials andt he American Cancer Society. The golf tournament honors George R. Pockock, friend of the association.

 

The third annual golf tournament featured a Shotgun Start with Scramble format, and featured a SEAA/NCCER Ironworker Craft Training Seminar. Prizes were awarded to the four best teams as well as closest to the pin and longest drive. More

Web App Makes it Easier to Find Right Joist Hanger
Simpson Strong Tie, Pleasanton, Calif., has released the Joist Hanger Selector web app. Now, customers can quickly and easily select the most appropriate and cost-effective hanger for their projects based on the type of installation, type and size of lumber and loads.

The new web app offers intuitive input fields and several other features, including:

OSHA Agrees to Rescind 2003 Letter of Interpretation on Pour Stop Angles

In June 2014, OSHA agreed to rescind a 2003 letter of interpretation regarding installation of continuous bent plate along the length of the top flange of a beam because it incorrectly applies a provision of Subpart R - Steel Erection. 

 

The provision in question is §1926.754(c)(1), headed Walking/working surfaces - shear connectors and other similar devices - (1)Tripping hazards.

Bridging the Gap: Report addresses safety climate in construction 

A report released in April 2014 by NIOSH and the Center for Construction Research and Training addresses the differences between a safety climate and safety culture. The report follows a 2013 workshop that looked at:

  • Leading indicators contributing to a safety climate.
  • How to measure the safety climate.
  • Identifying interventions to improve the safety climate.
  • Bridging the gaps in leadership, employee empowerment, communication, training, and other areas. Download the report here.
