Trivent Safety Consulting Hosts Live Fall Rescue Demo for SEAA Members

9/20/2024

Picture
Earlier this month, Trivent Safety Consulting opened its doors to the members of the Steel Erectors Association of America at their state-of-the-art training facility in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, creating a platform for vital safety education. Trivent trainers guided participants through best practices and strategies designed to mitigate risks associated with falls. Trivent showcased demonstrations of rescue from a fall arrest system using their specialized training tower. Attendees also gained insights into various types of rescue equipment and techniques that are essential for maintaining worker safety on construction sites. The demos emphasized the importance of being aware of orthostatic intolerance—an often-overlooked condition that can affect workers who have been suspended after a fall. The hands-on experience allowed industry professionals to engage directly with advanced safety protocols and tools necessary for effective emergency response in high-risk environments, underscoring the Trivent Safety Consulting’s commitment to fostering a culture of safety within the steel erection industry.

Picture
SEAA has opened the submission forms for 2025 Project of the Year, Safety Excellence, and Craft Training Excellence awards.

The Project of the Year Award is for SEAA members that topped out a steel erection or miscellaneous metals project from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2024. Applications can be submitted using a simple online form and supporting documents. Structural steel projects will compete in one of four classes, determined by the dollar value of the erection contract. Submissions are evaluated by an independent panel of judges based solely on information presented with each submission.

The Safety Excellence Award acknowledges SEAA members in good standing that go above and beyond in the effort to provide ironworkers a safe place to work, while the Craft Training Excellence Award is for companies that are playing a critical role in the development of skilled ironworkers. Winners are selected in blind presentation by SEAA’s Safety & Education Committee.

Winners are recognized during the Awards Ceremony at SEAA’s 2025 National Convention & Trade Show and will be invited to participate in panel discussions.

There is no cost for SEAA members to submit an application. The application deadline for Project of the Year is December 31, 2024, and the deadline for Safety Excellence and Craft Training Excellence awards is January 31, 2025.

INDUSTRY REPORTS

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

The construction industry has a suicide rate four times the national average for working-age adults. Within the construction industry, Ironworkers and Rebar Contractors rank in the top three construction occupations impacted by suicide.

Consider for a minute the number of fatalities due to falls in steel erection (11 in 2021, according to BLS data), and think about how much emphasis the industry puts on fall prevention. Suicides on the job equaled the same number of people who died from falls (11 in 2019.) Read More and check back for a November webinar on the topic with a guest speaker from the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention.

SteelDays 2023 is Right Around the Corner

The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) is hosting its annual SteelDays from October 17-20, 2023. SteelDays is the celebration of the structural steel industry, sponsored by the AISC and hosted by its members and partners. SteelDays is an opportunity for steel fabricators to connect with AEC professionals.

SteelDays offers events throughout the country for AEC professionals, faculty and students, and the public to see firsthand how the vibrant U.S. structural steel industry works to build our country's buildings and bridges.

INDUSTRY REPORTS

56,000 U.S Bridges to be Rebuilt by 2026

In 2021, it was reported that U.S. bridges had accrued a $125 billion backlog of critical maintenance needs. That was because 42 percent of them had been in service for more than 50 years. The same report found that it could possibly take 50 years to complete the backlog of critical bridge maintenance projects that would be required. That sobering news most likely encouraged elected officials to prioritize expediency related to repairing or replacing bridges in America. The bipartisan infrastructure bill provides $5 billion per year for bridge maintenance and repair until 2026. That funding is encouraging state and local officials to reimagine how they deliver bridge projects. Read More.

MKE Iron Erectors Utilizes TyBOT on Wisconsin Bridge Project

MKE Iron Erectors recently used TyBOT, an autonomous rebar-tying robot, to complete a bridge project in Wisconsin, a first for the state. Developed by Advanced Construction Robotic, TyBOT performed 17,823 ties in two shifts across a 7,775-sq-ft area on the IH-39 Structure B-11-166 bridge in Columbia County, north of Madison. That’s more than 1,100 ties per hour.

The bridge MKE was repairing is in a congested area, so shutting down traffic lanes was a problem. “It would have been a very tight job and required a lot of manpower to get the work done,” said MKE CEO and President Barbara Sheedy. “So, not only the ability to have the TyBOT tie so quickly compared to human ties, but the ability to have the TyBOT work second shift was important to us.” Read More

New ASTM Standard Specs for FRP Rebars

ASTM International’s composite materials committee (D30) has developed a new standard specification for the latest generation of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement bars.

According to ASTM International member Francisco De Caso, this new standard (D8505) is a milestone after several decades of collaboration to further integrate these composites into infrastructure. “The higher performance specified for bars, results in a significant improvement of design and construction of concrete structures reinforced with non-metallic FRP bars," says De Caso, principal scientist at the University of Miami, Florida. “This translates into more efficient and sustainable design of concrete structures." SEAA Announces the Winners of its 2023 Project of the Year, Safety Excellence, and Craft Training Excellence Awards

5/19/2023

Project of the Year
Entries for Project of the Year could be submitted in four classes for Structural Construction based on contract value for that portion of the job. In addition, the association opened a new category last year for Miscellaneous Metals in two classes. This category includes bridges, decking, ornamental steel, reinforcing steel, and steel fabrication projects. In all, five companies were recognized for effectively solving unique jobsite challenges while safely completing projects. Project submissions are reviewed and selected by an independent panel of judges.

Connector, the associations official publication, will feature each project in-depth in issues throughout the year. The Summer issue will highlight Structural Steel: Class I winner Hodges Erectors and Miscellaneous Metals: Class I and II winners Basden Steel Corporation and Shelby Erectors. Structural Steel: Class III and IV winners Derr Gruenewald Construction and Williams Steel Erection will be featured in the Fall issue.

Safety Excellence & Craft Training Excellence Awards
2023 Safety Excellence Awards goes to seven member companies in three categories with excellent 2022 safety records. Recipients were selected based on evaluations of their EMR ratings, OSHA 300A statistics, and safety program processes over the last three years. Scoring was based on points assigned to a multi-criteria analysis, conducted in blind review by members of SEAA’s Safety & Education Committee.

Safety Excellence and Craft Training Excellence winners will be featured in the Winter issue of Connector.
Picture
Two companies were recognized for the 2023 Craft Training Award. Applicants were evaluated on the portability of credentials, availability of apprenticeship programs, training, and recruitment efforts. Evaluations for the Craft Training Excellence award are made in comparison to other companies of similar size, based on the number of ironworkers employed from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2022. Note that there were not submissions by employers in all size categories for 2023. The World Class honorees each receive $1,500 to further their training program initiatives.

INDUSTRY REPORTS

New ANSI Z359.14 Effective Date is August 1

In 2021, ANSI approved a revision of Z359.14, Safety Requirements for Self-Retracting Devices (SRDs) for Personal Fall Arrest and Rescue Systems. The updated ANSI Z359.14 standard establishes requirements for the performance, design, marking, qualification, instruction, training, test methods, inspection use, maintenance, and removal from service of self-retracting devices. In December of 2022, the ANSI Z359 Committee approved a second 6-month extension to the effective date of the ANSI Z359.14 standard. The standard will now go into effect on August 1, 2023.

This update to Z359.14 includes revisions and new requirements, including:

  • A change to the device types defined in the standard
  • Changes to previously established classifications of device types
  • A 20% increase in minimum static strength requirements
  • More rigorous energy-management requirements
  • Changes to labeling requirements
  • Inclusion of Guidance for the End-User (Appendix B)

The changes in this update are significant and take into account many of the notable developments in Self-Retracting Device technologies and consumer expectations. It also simplifies how SRDs are described and classified to help users better understand their capabilities and limitations.

Union Health Reps File Lawsuit for Pushing Opioids on Skilled Trade Workers

According to an article from THE CITY, a group of union health funds has sued global consulting firm McKinsey & Co. for its role in the opioid crisis. The lawsuit alleges that McKinsey worked with Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, and was specifically tasked with helping the pharmaceutical company increase OxyContin sales, pushing not just individual prescriptions but for the highest dosages of the pills, according to the lawsuit.

In 2021, McKinsey & Co. settled with 49 states over its role working with Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, and other companies that produce addictive painkillers like OxyContin. INDUSTRY REPORTS

New Compliance Directive for Cranes and Derricks

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has released a new compliance directive CPL 02-01-063 for cranes and derricks. This directive replaces the 2014 compliance directive CPL 02-01-057 and addresses the changes in the crane rule that OSHA made in 2018. The new compliance directive only revises the existing section on operator training, certification, and evaluation and leaves the other sections of the 2014 directive unchanged. While the document is intended for OSHA inspectors, it is also useful to assist business owners and managers in being proactive to prevent citations.

Dave Schulz Memorial Golf Tournament Raises Thousands for Safety and Education

9/21/2022

Picture
The sold-out Dave Schulz Memorial Golf Tournament supporting SEAA’s safety and education projects raised more than $13,000. “For our first venture west, turnout for the tournament and participation in the Meet & Greet held the previous night was outstanding,” said Pete Gum, Executive Director. More than 80 people registered for the Meet & Greet and 60 golfers competed in the tournament. “We appreciate the support of sponsors, who made this a successful meeting,” said Gum.

The tournament was held at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club in Broomfield, Colo., on September 16, where a scramble was played on three adjacent courses. Golfers repeatedly claimed that the greens, fairways, and mountain scenery made this one of the most beautiful courses they had ever played. The tournament returns to its original location in North Carolina in 2023.

“We were thrilled that Denver local Kayleen McCabe, representing the McCabe Foundation, joined us,” said Carrie Gulajan, Events Chairperson. McCabe, who is a construction industry celebrity and former SEAA convention keynote speaker, is an advocate for careers in the construction trades.

Peer Group Discusses Recruiting, Retention
The meeting also included its first-ever Peer Group, a small discussion group of local companies which met the previous day, prior to the Meet & Greet. The theme of the discussion was recruiting and retention. “Two years ago, SEAA’s Board of Directors made a strategic decision to re-form committees, opening them up to members at large in order to provide more opportunities for member engagement. As those positions have been filled, we are now implementing phase two—local peer groups,” said Jack Nix, Membership Chairperson.

Facilitated by Tucker Smith of BBSI and Victor Garcia of Denver’s Flawless Steel Welding, the group of about 10 shared struggles and best practices. “Peer groups are a safe place to speak openly. That dialog is critical to giving SEAA members in a local area connections and resources for improving their businesses and the industry,” said Nix.

Following the Peer Group, area erectors, fabricators, engineering firms, and suppliers learned about new benefits of SEAA membership and heard about product and services solutions from sponsors Kenwood, Nelson Stud Welding, and Well Works.
