Project of the Year Deadline Extended The deadline for submitting 2012 Project of the Year nominations has been extended to January 31, 2013. It seems that the December 31 deadline in the midst of the holidays made it difficult for members to submit their nominations. The deadline will continue as January 31 for future years to give people more time to put together their submission packets for projects completed in the prior year. New Board Member Elected Duke Perry was elected to fill an open seat on the SEAA Board of Directors for the 2012-14 term. He was approved during the January SEAA Board of Directors Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Ballots for SEAA Board of Directors Check the mail for your ballot to select members of the SEAA Board of Directors for 2013. Nuclear power station construction in the USA, China and elsewhere is driving demand, as had activity in the petrochemical, ship building and offshore energy equipment construction industry worldwide. The big news is that end users have independently designed and built super heavy lift cranes, even though some of the mainstream crane manufacturers are active at the top end of the heavy lift arena.
Design approaches vary, from types most similar to conventional cranes – Mammoet, Lampson, Sarens – to variations that are less so. For example, ALE, Bigge use strand jacks or no counterweight.
Bigge Crane & Rigging in the USA has its 125D AFRD, which it describes as the world’s largest capacity crane at radius. Bigge gives the capacity of the ARFD as 7,500 US tons on 300 feet of main boom and 4,000 tons with 560 feet of main boom. Fixed jibs will be available in excess of 1,000-ton capacity and 200 feet long, according to Pete Ashton, vice president of major projects.
In heavy lift cranes since the 1970s, USA-based Lampson International’s Transi-Lift cranes are familiar at nuclear power plants around the world, says Kate Lampson. The largest Lampson, the LTL-3000, has a capacity of 3,000 tons. The Transi-Lift system is a patented configuration that combines the heavy lifting capacities of stiff leg derricks and ring mounted lift equipment with the mobility of a conventional crawler crane.
With its origins in the USA at subsidiary Rigging International, Belgium-based international specialist Sarens’ contender is the SGC-120 announced in 2010. With 3,200-tonnes capacity at 30 meters radius and 1,000 tons at 80 m., the ring-based unit lifts with winches like a conventional crane, as do the Bigge, Lampson and Mammoet offerings. Like the ALE and Mammoet models, it was designed for flexible worldwide transportation in standard shipping containers.
The reported lead time to build these cranes is between three and four years, which means always taking a risk because this is longer than the contract lead time. Planned projects do not always come to fruition. For example, the Japanese nuclear disaster put a stop to many contracts which contractors were gearing up for.”
Also adding time to the development process, some clients bring in external consultants to check the procedures and calculations. Overall this is not such a bad thing because having an independent check further improves safety.

Quinlan Enterprises Named a 2012 Outstanding Subcontractor of the Year - back to top

Turner Construction Company’s Atlanta Business Unit has selected Quinlan Enterprises as a 2012 Outstanding Subcontractor of the Year. This award was based on various criteria such as safety, quality of work, project management, estimating, and purchasing support as well as commitment to Turner Construction Company’s policies, procedures, and community affairs.
This award publicly recognizes and acknowledges the contributions made by their excellent subcontractors. Award recipients were recognized at a special event on December 6, 2012 at Turner’s Atlanta offices.

The Seismic Design Manual is now available in its second edition from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). This new edition contains hundreds of pages of comprehensive design examples, including connections, updated for the 2010 AISC Seismic Provisions. The new manual is available now in hard-copy format, with the digital edition available on February 1. Either format can be purchased by AISC members for $175 or by non-members for $350. Omega Morgan Moves Large Oregon Bridge to New Location - back to top

As part of a bridge replacement project, moving, rigging and transport specialist Omega Morgan actually slid a road bridge to a new position across the Willamette River in what it claims as one of longest bridge moves ever attempted. On January 19, Omega Morgan successfully shifted the 87-year-old Sellwood Bridge in one piece and on a radius to the north to provide a temporary route while a new $307-million bridge is built in the original location.
The Sellwood Bridge, at 1,972 feet long, 75 feet high and, 28 feet wide, is one of the state of Oregon’s busiest bridges, carrying some 30,000 vehicles a day. The bridge links SW Portland to its SE business district and suburbs.
"We are really pleased to be involved in this important, complex and exciting project,” said John McCalla, CEO/president of Omega Morgan, one of the West Coast’s leading moving, rigging and transportation companies.
Both Omega Morgan and general contractors Slayden/Sundt Joint Venture have successfully used this detour bridge method for other projects. “Omega Morgan has moved bridges weighing upwards of eight million pounds, but this one does offer some additional challenges,” McCalla said.
The company’s chief engineer, Ralph DiCaprio, said the company welcomes the challenges. “This is why we like what we do. There’s something different on every project,” he said.
Devising a strategy to move the bridge in one piece helped Omega Morgan win the contract after showing that it would save time, money and duplication of efforts, according to parties involved in the project. Other proposals had suggested expensive and redundant structural features and extensive staging.
The plan is to use hydraulic jacks to lift the bridge onto skid gear and then to move and mount it on new piers that have been built in the river. The aging bridge will then become the “shoofly” or detour while construction begins on the new bridge. Officials on the project said the temporary bridge will be inspected before it is open to traffic.
The 87-year-old bridge replaced a ferry called the John F. Caples, a steam-powered vessel that took 582 vehicles and 452 pedestrians across the Willamette River each day. It was Portland’s first fixed-span bridge, meaning that it did not have a draw or swing span.
The decision was made to replace the Sellwood Bridge because it cannot handle the current volume of traffic, has a low rating on a federal bridge rating, and buses and heavy trucks are restricted from using the bridge. It also has narrow lanes and sidewalk, no bike facilities and it is not designed to withstand earthquakes even though the area is in one of the most dangerous earthquake zones in the U.S.
