Steel Erectors Announce 2018 Convention Program

The Steel Erectors Association of America will hold its 46th Annual Convention and Trade Show April 25-27, in Greensboro, N.C., at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center. Headlining the speaker program is Brent Darnell, award winning Emotional Intelligence expert for the construction industry. Darnell approaches common industry leadership problems with humor and insight. He explains: “In the construction industry, many people have excellent technical skills, but get off track with people, relationship, communication, and teamwork skills.” Awareness of this “softer side” of construction, helps contractors attract and retain the best people, create safety programs that actually work, and increase performance.

Other speakers will address topics of interest to both management and field personnel.

Legal topics include sessions on Waiver of Subrogation by Stephen Safran with Safran Law Office, and a case study demonstrating pitfalls of contact language that delegate responsibility to lower tier subs by Jim Larson, a fabrication, engineering, and detailing expert, and Frank Kollman, representing Kollman & Saucier, P.A.

Business topics include how win projects using lift planning software by Tawnia Weiss, president of A1A Software and maker of the popular 3D Lift Plan program, and Jeremy Macliver, a business management consultant with firsthand experience working for a steel erector with discuss strategic execution for growing and expanding your business.

Additional presentations will cover use of drones, fall protection, safety, and certifications for steel erectors. The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) will participate in the convention and provide important insights affecting erectors and fabricators.

New Meeting Format

The convention kicks off with the popular Welcome Reception and Trade Show, followed by some changes to the meeting format, including a roundtable discussion with the winners of the Project of the Year award. It’s not too late to submit a nomination. Meanwhile, social events, sport shooting, golf, and several receptions offer plenty of opportunities for networking.
