Deadline to Apply for New Training Grant is Jan. 30
The SEAA Education Committee will award one $4500 SEAA Craft Training Grant to a member company at the 2016 Convention in Charlotte, N.C. The deadline to apply is Jan. 30, 2016.

The grant will be distributed throughout the process of becoming an NCCER accredited Training Unit or Assessment Site, and is enough to cover startup costs, including initial setup, training for administrators, instructors, and coordinators, plus a set of textbooks.

"With this grant we can have a greater impact on the number of Ironworkers trained than by awarding a single education scholarship to an individual," said Dave Schultz, a member of the Scholarship Committee. The benefits of becoming a SEAA/NCCER Training Unit and Assessment Site are many:
  • Provide your employees with  industry-recognized training and credentials.
  • Verify knowledge and skill level of workers in order to improve safety and productivity.
  • Recruit new employees.
  • Gain access to NCCER's curriculum for more than 67 crafts.

Keynote: The Challenges in Command
Ride Along in a NASCAR race car at the Richard Petty Driving Experience
Terry McKnight, author of Pirate Alley: Commanding Task Force 151 off Somalia and retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral will open the 2016 SEAA Convention.

In 2009, Rear Admiral McKnight was assigned as the first commander of the international task force (Task Force 151) to fight maritime piracy in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia. Facing not only the challenges of capturing the buccaneers, but the dynamics of working with a coalition of maritime forces that had never operated together before and the pressures of government bureaucracy, McKnight was able to provide the leadership to a successful operation.

Don't miss this dynamic, insightful speaker whose story helped inspire the movie, Captain Phillips.

Experience the thrill of riding shotgun in a 2-seat NASCAR race car driven by a professional driving instructor at the Richard Petty Driving Experience . The  three-lap qualifying run reaches speeds up to 165 MPH in a 600 hp NASCAR race car. A minimum of 20 people are required to allow SEAA to offer this unique excursion. Sign up by April 1.

Gala to be held at Speedway
Dinner, dancing and racing! Featuring the best steaks and the best view in Charlotte, the 2016 Gala Event will be held Thurs., April 28 at Charlotte Motor Speedway's Speedway Club. Jump start the evening doing a pace car lap around the track.
Safety Flash: Preventing Falls in Steel Erection Activities
Example of Proper Tie Off
Fall protection violations were ranked No. 1 on all three Top 10 OSHA violations lists for the last fiscal year, including most cited (7,516 violations), serious (6,173), and willful (161). But it's the inclusion of fall protection violations specific to steel erection (1926.760), which ranked No. 9 on the Willful Violations list that is most concerning for steel erection companies.

According to a 2015 presentation by Paul Mangiafico, an OSHA Compliance Assistance Specialist with the Hartford, Conn., area office, 9% of fatal falls were from structural steel. He reports that most of these occur during commencement of steel erection, citing Subpart R 1926.760(a)(1).

SEAA offers several resources to assist members in providing Fall Prevention training.  More

Study suggests many are not prepared for certification requirements
According to the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) in a press release issued Nov. 30, 2015, OSHA continues to work on a Proposed Rulemaking for crane operator qualifications.

Look for Bylaws Revisions
SEAA's Board of Directors has been reviewing the association's bylaws, and are proposing several revisions. This is the first time changes have been considered since the bylaws were adopted on 8/23/2000. All proposed amendments must be submitted to the membership for approval. Two-thirds affirmative vote is required.

Among the changes being proposed is to allow for Board of Directors elections to be conducted via electronic mail. In addition, it's time to vote on your 2016-2018 Board of Directors. Look for more information on both these items by March 1, 2016.
