Awards and Grants Deadline Approaching
 
The SEAA Education Committee annually awards one  Craft Training Grant  to a member that has applied to become an NCCER accredited Training Unit (TU) and Assessment Site (AAS) in the previous year. The grant is awarded at the annual convention. March 15 is the deadline for SEAA members to submit Project of the Year entries and to apply for the annual Training Grant.  More.

New Employer Guides to Crane Operator Certification
Following the publication of OSHA’s  Final Rule  on crane operator qualifications, and the November 10, 2018 requirement for crane operators to be certified nationwide, NCCCO has published three Employer Guides.
 
The guides review   training ,  certification , and  evaluation   requirements covered by the Rule. The Guides adhere to the language of the Rule, but the Q&A format employed is designed to make the information more accessible. More
 
 
Retired OSHA Construction Director Dean McKenzie Passes Away
 
Dean McKenzie, retired director of the OSHA’s Directorate of Construction, passed away on November 4, 2018, after a yearlong battle with cancer.
 
Working as a project manager for several construction companies in the Denver, Colo., area when he was offered a position with OSHA, McKenzie rose swiftly through the agency ranks to lead the Directorate of Construction. He embraced the position, and cherished every day he worked there, according to his obituary. More
 
Survey Says Skilled Worker Shortages Impact Safety on Jobsites
In its Q3 2018 Commercial Construction Index, the USG Corporation and U.S. Chamber of Commerce found that the scarce labor pool is affecting more than performance and jobsite efficiency. According to survey respondents, 80 percent of contractors say that skilled labor shortages also impact jobsite safety.
 
In addition to the skilled labor shortage, contractors say safety risks are compounded by shortened construction schedules, an aging workforce and substance abuse. More
 
White Papers From IPAF Explain New Work Platform S tandards
To help the powered access industry move toward compliance with the updated ANSI A92 suite of Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) standards, IPAF has issued guidance in the form a  four white papers , which are free to download.
 
Published Dec. 10, 2018, the updated ANSI A92 suite has an effective date of December 2019. IPAF is also addressing the Canadian CSA standards, implemented in May, 2018 . More

Two RK Projects Win Construction Excellence Awards
 
 
Two RK projects recently won first place in the Associated Builders and Contractors Rocky Mountain Chapter’s 2018 Excellence in Construction Awards for merit shop projects in the Rocky Mountain region.
 
RK Steel won the award in the Exteriors category for the Mile High Harley-Davidson of Parker Canopy project. RK Mechanical took home the award in the Mechanical category for the C. Wayne McIlwraith Translational Medicine Institute.  More.
 
JP Cullen Marks Apprentice Appreciation Week
In November, JP Cullen, brought together its 92 apprentices from Janesville, Madison, and Milwaukee, Wis., as part of Apprentice Appreciation Week. Apprentices heard stories from the experienced veterans, shared lessons learned with one another, and asked questions on careers in construction.
 
The event also focused on teamwork skills and developing career-lasting relationships. As part of JP Cullen’s apprenticeship program, company representatives meet with each apprentice individually to go over their career path, and show them all of the opportunities that can come from a career in construction. Apprentices also receive feedback on areas in which they are excelling, and can improve.  More.
 
Founder of LPR Construction Parent Company Retires
 
Longbow Industries, LLC, the parent company of LPR Construction, has announced that founder Rocky Turner, current CEO and chairman of the board, would step down at the end of December. Rocky Turner continues to serve as board chair, and Linc Turner, Longbow president, succeeds him effective January 1, 2019. Grant Thayer, who has served as Longbow’s CFO, will step into the role of president. More.
 
High Speed Mag Drill Increases Tool Life for Carbide Cutters
 
 
Hougen Manufacturing Inc. has released a new model of portable magnetic drill, the HMD906. This new model is a high-speed mag drill designed to take full advantage of carbide annular cutters. Carbide tooling is more effective at drilling holes when turned at a higher RPM.
 
With the high torque, high RPM motor, the HMD906 cuts holes more efficiently with carbide then standard mag drills.For safety the HMD906 incorporates Hougen’s exclusive features to insure a safe work environment—including a no-adjustment safety switch, which shuts down the drill motor if lift of the magnetic base is detected.  More.
 
Atlas Mfg. Discusses Manufacturing Technology
 
 
Jay Frost, Atlas Manufacturing’s director of strategic initiatives, and Nawal Whig, Atlas technical program manager, presented at The Fabricator’s Technology Summit in October. The presentation focused on Assisted Reality and how it has impacted the company’s manufacturing process. Specifically, the two discussed the use of RealWear headsets on Atlas’ production floor. Lincoln Electric Acquires Inovatech Engineering Corp.
 
Lincoln Electric Holdings, Inc. has announced the acquisition of Inovatech Engineering Corporation and related assets. Inovatech is a privately held Ontario, Canada -based manufacturer of advanced robotic plasma cutting solutions for structural steel applications. Lincoln Electric is the world leader in the design, development and manufacture of arc welding products, robotic arc welding systems, plasma and oxyfuel cutting equipment and has a leading global position in the brazing and soldering alloys market. SkyGuard Skyline Now Standard on JLG Boom Lifts
 
 
JLG Industries, Inc., has released SkyGuard Skyline™ as a standard control on North American boom lifts. The control features a slim wire rope design that is bolted to the left side the platform with an opposing magnetic connection. If the operator contacts the cable, and the magnet detaches, the system stops all boom lift functions, then momentarily reverses or undoes most functions that were in use when the system was activated. This system is designed to reduce operators becoming trapped between the
platform and another object. More.
